In Japan, the 2nd Monday of January is a national holiday known as “Coming of Age Day.” Local governments (municipalities) throw a celebration for adults who have turned 20 on this auspicious day. People such as city mayors speak to the young people to congratulate them on their transition to maturity and to urge them to be optimistic, responsible adults. To attend the ceremony, male participants wear suits, while female participants usually wear kimono. Foreign inhabitants, it seems, are also invited. People may reconnect with old acquaintances (from elementary school, junior high school, high school, and so on) for the first time in a long time, thanks to this event. Such reunions were one highlight of the celebration day for me.
